Full description:

A small piece of a meteorite which exploded over the Berea plateau on 21 July 2002. Hundreds of pieces of the meteorite have since been collected by Prof. David Ambrose and his team. On the 21st July, there was a long and an unusual sound that was heard in the early hours of the morning. It was heard from Butha-Buthe in the north of Lesotho through Maseru to Mohale’s Hoek in the south and afterwards at Thaba-Tseka deep in the mountains to the east. After travelling through space for the past 4600 million years, the meteorite, which may have weighed as much as 1 ton, entered the Earth’s atmosphere. It became extreemely hot due to friction, portions of it burned up, until it eventually exploded. No one was hurt from the falling debris.
