Full description:

Large clear or white quartz crystals (mahakoe in Sesotho) are commonly found in seams in the basalt formations in the mountains of Lesotho. Quartz, whether in very small crystals characteristic of sand (and sandstone), or in larger crystals of many different colours and structures, is made from silicon dioxide or silica. Some forms of quartz crystals, like agates, are also found in Lesotho and these semi-precious gem stones are cut, polished and used in jewellery. Large quartz crystals are not to be confused with diamonds which are also present in Lesotho.
