Full description:
Petrified wood from Thaba-Ts’oeu in Mohale’s Hoek District. Ancient trees, like bones, can become hard like stone if mineral salts found in water gradually infiltrate and replace the previous living matter (organic matter), such that the original shape and structure of the tree or bone is preserved. This process takes thousands of years to be completed. Only a very small fraction of trees and bones are preserved in this manner as most decay.
